In the past plate coolers where generally bought on the basis that the bigger they are the better they will work. This is not necessarily true!
Milk leaving the cow was generally cooled from 35C to approx. 22C anyone getting down to 18 was deemed to be doing well.
United Tankcare specialises in designing milk cooling systems to keep these costs to a minimum. However in recent years technology has improved and Tankcare now has the ability to design plate coolers based on flow rates of milk and water to maximise efficiency.
In an effort to further reduce pre cooled milk temperatures, United Tankcare and Drilling & Pumping Supplies Ltd. a company who specialise in the design & supply of water, sewage and effluent pumps, have been able to advance the functionality of pre cooling.
The result is a system which ensures optimal flow rates for water and milk and a plate cooler specifically designed for the site.
The “Versatile Dairy System” developed by Drilling & Pumping Supplies Ltd is designed to conserve water, improve farm efficiency and provide for very efficient heat transfer.
The end result is a temperature reduction of 25C, so milk will enter the bulk tank at 10C. This will reduce the milk cooling electricity bill by 80%.
This system also means producers who only have mains water or roof water to work with can still achieve these remarkable results.
Modern parlours all use milk pumps with flow rates in the region of 133 litres/min and very few bore holes can supply enough water to attain good cooling.
Some parlours are now fitted with variable speed milk pumps. These pumps normally operate at a flow rate of approx. 90 litres/min. to 133 litres /min.
While this is still a good option and better than a fixed flow rate milk pump it is still difficult to achieve the optimum water to milk flow ratios
To achieve optimum cooling, flow rates in excess of 3 to 1 may be required, dependant on water temperature.
The system has been designed over several years and is designed specifically for the individual farm.
Tankcare and Drilling & Pumping Supplies can provide a complete turnkey system to suit your needs.
Payback time for the system would typically be in the region of 3-5 years.

James Kirk of Ballydyan Crossgar who recently installed the system commented “the system went against my logical train of thought however the results are undeniable my milk is entering the tank at 10C the coolers hardly ever run and the tank is finished cooling as soon as I have finished milking”
